WHO IS ART GURWITZ?
He was with Newsweek magazine’s international edition in the early 1980’s, joining as Controller of the Latin America edition; he then moved to Tokyo, Japan, where he lived for three years and worked as General Manager of the Pacific edition. After that, he moved back to New York, promoted to Vice President, Finance and Administration, overseeing worldwide operations. During the latter portion of his career, it became apparent that the magazine business was undergoing a significant change, moving from a business that sold ad pages by virtue of individual relationships to a more data driven business, which they were not good at, and most importantly, a complete lack of recognition of how technology was going significantly impact - negatively - the appeal of magazines to a shifting demographic.
In recognition of that, he migrated his career to the legal industry. He have been fortunate to have held senior positions in the most prestigious and successful major international firms. He was the senior person, essentially equal to President in the corporate world, working directly with the Chairman and Executive Committee.
He started his career in the legal industry with Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton as Chief Financial Officer; thereafter he was the Executive Director (that was the then title for the top administrative position) of Dewey Ballantine - not Dewey LeBouef, which because of what is widely viewed as poor management, went out of business after the unsuccessful merger of two heretofore successful firms. He was recruited from Dewey Ballantine to become the Executive Director of Sullivan & Cromwell, which for over a century has been known to be among the the world’s elite firms. He managed their worldwide operations. He was then recruited to become Chief Operating Officer of Proskauer Rose, another of the world’s major international firms, again managing worldwide operations. He is proud to say during his tenure each firm enjoyed consistent and significant growth in both revenues and profits.
Throughout his 30 year career, he developed an extensive professional network throughout the international legal industry. He served several the head of the Executive Director's Forum, where amongst other accomplishments, moved that group to be significantly more international in scope.
He authored the seminal book on law firm management, entitled “The role of the COO in challenging times”, published by Thomson Reuters.
